Ukraine war has triggered a crime wave – in the British countryside

According to a recent article in POLITICO, British police reckon that a surge in farm machinery thefts has been triggered by the sanctions placed on Russia due to the war.

“We know from where we’ve recovered equipment, where we are seeing equipment we have recovered but also that’s being tracked before we can intercept it, it’s heading to Eastern Europe, without a doubt,” Superintendent Andrew Huddleston, who leads the U.K.’s National Rural Crime Unit, told POLITICO.

Tractor GPS systems, including cab terminals and receivers seem to be a favourite for thieves, and there have been several reports of large scale multi unit thefts in recent weeks across the country. Farmers and contractors are being urged to secure machines and equipment in locked and alarmed buildings with CCTV if possible. Insurers are keen to see that any terms of cover have been met before considering payouts for theft.
