Having been abandoned this weekend in favour of the Kendal Calling festival by many in the household, myself and the farm manager have been left to our own devices. As is usual when out of direct management control we have found plenty to do.

Including a ‘shufty’ round the NWA J36 machinery sale, which had slim pickings, outside of a job lot of ‘calf hutches’ (think IBC with a hole cut in the side, because thats what they are!). Plus numerous knackered balers, tedders and trailer wheels and tyres. My mate John refers to it as a ‘clearing house for the counties farmers’. One mans rubbish, and all that.

Then a hurtle up through the Dales to almost Ripon for a charity Shearathon. I didn’t even know such a thing existing, but they do, and this particular event was raising money for three worthwhile charities, Brake – The Road Safety Charity, The UK Sepsis Trust and Papyrus – Prevention of young suicide. What an atmosphere! Follow this link to support their vital work.

As I settled down to reflect on the many conversations of the last week, a few things are becoming clear, a dry summer = strong wearing parts sales, plus a few unexpected spot purchases due to breakages. More than one combine and baler has met a sad end in flames, which will require a call to the NFU. And finally all growers who have ordered and paid for their fertiliser, are sitting with their arms folded, not allowing the grain trade to talk down the price of this year’s crop! Take a quick look at the AHDB’s latest crop report, which is nuanced and sits on the fence nicely..

That aside, I filled up with diesel at 179.9 ppl yesterday. Its creeping back up again..
