Comment – self sufficiency, and clear your plate.

I know that we think we design, make, sell and service tractors and  agricultural machinery, but really we are in the food business. I say this because we are enablers of efficient food production and landscape management.

Before anyone gets too shouty regarding forestry, grounds maintenance and so on, just remember, you need a farmer three times a day, but probably not the golf course?

Its interesting that this week saw ‘self sufficiency day’ on the 14th August, which is the day when the UK would run out of food from the 1st January if we only ate our own produce, and at the current 62% it was Wednesday just gone. In fresh vegetables it’s even earlier at 53%, the lowest self sufficiency percentage since records began.

This week also makes the date when both pigs returned home via the butchers in that user friendly format, the sausage. Fridges and freezers are now crammed.  I’m doing my best to extend our personal self sufficiency and  to sell them to all comers!

The point I’m trying to make is that its important to all of us, to ensure maximum self sufficiency in food, so clear your plate, and make sure its the best of British food in your shopping basket. As all our livelihoods depend on it.

Have a good week.

Andy
