Institution of Agricultural Engineers (IAgrE) supports 7 year olds farm safety book
- The book called ‘The Girl in the Yellow Wellies has been written and illustrated by mother Laura Thompson and her daughter Erin who is seven years old
Laura said, “Living close to a farmyard I have constantly been reminding Erin of how to stay safe since she was very little. Particularly because her grandparents house is across the yard from us and Erin would always want to run over to them.”
“Her cousins would regularly visit and we would be constantly telling them as well, however at times we felt they were not really listening so we came up the idea of a book as a way of getting the message across in a different way,” she added.
Charlie Nicklin, CEO of IAgrE commented, “This is such a simple but effective idea, it’s a great read and has a lot of tips on how children can stay safe on a working farm. In the last reporting year to the 31st March 2024, of the 23 fatalities on farms 2 were children and in the 6 months since a further 2 children have lost their lives. Farming has the highest number of deaths of any industry, so we felt it was important for us to donate and support the project.”
“The book took over six months to complete. Erin drew all the pictures and then we had to rhyme each story so this would help children engage with the ideas in the book,” Laura said.
Erin has always been known as the girl in the yellow wellies, as she has always had yellow hunter wellies since she was a toddler.
During the summer the books have been handed out to young handlers upon registration at the Royal Welsh and Cockermouth Shows.
