MB-Trac commands £94k at final Vintage auction of 2024

  • The concluding Cheffins Vintage auction of 2024 attracted a strong turnout of keen bidders and delivered some fantastic results, with the highlight being an immaculate 1991 MB-Trac 1600, which made the top price of the day at £94,336

Resplendent in a familiar lime green livery, the four-wheel-drive MB-Trac was in superb condition following some cosmetic restoration by the vendor. Tom Godsmark, Associate at Cheffins, says the superb condition of items such as this, and the attraction of owning a piece of history, shows why 2024 has been another strong year for classic machinery.

“Cheffins’ Cambridge Vintage Auctions has had an excellent 12 months, with all sales grossing over £1.5m each. Vintage and classic machinery markets continue to be buoyant, and, even with uncertainty over the impending budget, buyers are confident to invest in a tangible asset.”

Other top prices included £71,824 for a 1927 Sentinel ‘Super Steam Waggon’; a 1987 Massey Ferguson 2645 Electronic made £49,312; a Roadless Ploughmaster 6/4 finished at £33,232; a sought-after John Deere 4255 made £32,160; and a 1988 Marshall 754XL settled at £21,440.

The vehicles and motorcycles always draw a huge crowd and a superb 2002 Toyota Hilux Ex, with just 28,000 miles on the clock, made a staggering £24,120, which is likely to have exceeded its new value. A 1957 BSA Custom Chopper made £10,969, with all proceeds donated to the East Anglian Air Ambulance. There were several scale models in demand, including a Ferguson Demonstration Model, making a superb £13,140, and no less than four JCB 1/16 scale brass models, each fetching £5,000 on average.

Tom concludes: “The continuing demand of the modern classics has remained very strong across all auctions. We want to thank all our vendors and buyers for their continued support throughout the year. Our next Vintage sale is planned for April 2025 and is already shaping up to be extremely exciting.”
