Used equipment marketplace expands routes to market

Mascus is marking 25 years since launching its first online marketplace for used equipment, with the business now offering sellers additional routes to market through its relationship with Ritchie Bros.

The marketplace, launched in Helsinki in 2001, currently attracts around 3.1 million website visits a month, with more than 5,700 professional sellers advertising over 500,000 machines and vehicles.

Listings cover agriculture, transportation, construction and mining, forestry, material handling and groundscare.

Since launch, more than 18 million items of heavy machinery and trucks have been listed on the platform. Sellers have received more than five million buying enquiries by email and four million telephone enquiries, according to Mascus.

The marketplace now operates across 53 main categories and 547 subcategories, with websites available in more than 30 languages.

Mascus became part of Ritchie Bros. in 2016, and the two businesses have increasingly integrated their sales channels.

Alongside fixed-price listings on Mascus, sellers can access Ritchie Bros. reserved and unreserved auctions. Equipment that does not sell through one channel can subsequently be offered through an auction, providing an alternative route to market and a defined sale date.

Mascus users can also access equipment being offered through Ritchie Bros. auctions, allowing auction inventory to be viewed alongside conventional fixed-price listings.

The development gives dealers, equipment owners, rental companies and traders more flexibility over how individual assets are marketed, with the appropriate route depending on the equipment and seller’s requirements.

Mascus has also expanded beyond conventional classified advertising. Around 1,500 customer webshops are currently active, providing businesses with branded online storefronts linked to their Mascus inventory.

The company has developed a network of 27 offices and 43 websites, supported by local teams working with dealers, manufacturers, rental companies and traders.

Rickard Krøtø, Managing Director at Mascus, said the business had helped sellers reach markets beyond their traditional geographic areas since its launch.

The latest developments point towards a used equipment market where online classified listings and auction channels increasingly operate as complementary rather than separate sales routes.
