Autonomous farming rollout 

American sugar producer U.S. Sugar is ramping up its investment in autonomous and precision farming technologies as it looks to improve efficiency, sustainability and productivity across its vast South Florida operations. 

The company recently announced what it describes as the largest commercial deployment of autonomous tractors in the American sugar industry, introducing a fleet of unmanned John Deere tractors across its 255,000-acre farming network.  

The rollout follows an 18-month pilot programme and uses automation systems developed by Autonomous Solutions, Inc.alongside machinery supplied by John Deere dealer Everglades Equipment Group. The autonomous fleet currently includes John Deere 8R and 9R tractors capable of operating around the clock under supervision from a centralised control station.  

According to U.S. Sugar, the move forms part of a wider digital transformation strategy that connects machines, sensors and field data through one integrated network. The company claims to operate one of the world’s largest private agricultural Wi-Fi systems, covering around 220,000 acres.  

Its precision agriculture platform includes drones, IoT-connected machinery, telematics and real-time field monitoring systems designed to optimise fuel use, irrigation, crop protection and machine performance. More than 21,000 GPS guidance lines are reportedly shared across its farming fleet to minimise crop damage and improve field accuracy.  

U.S. Sugar says autonomous systems are already being used for sugarcane land preparation and cultivation, with potential expansion into sweet corn and green bean production in future. The company also stated that existing employees will be retrained to support and manage the new technology.  

The investment highlights the growing role of automation in large-scale crop production as labour shortages, operating costs and sustainability pressures continue to reshape modern farming.
